About Work Zone Flagger

From New York State Department of Transportation Standard Specifications: Flagger Training. All flaggers shall be adequately trained in flagging operations by recognized training programs, including the American Traffic Safety Services Association, The National Safety Council, unions, or construction industry associations, or by an individual who holds a current certification as a flagger training instructor from such a program. Prior to the start of flagging operations, the Contractor shall provide to the Engineer a list of certified flaggers to be used in the operation, identifying the source of flagger training for each individual. When requested by the Engineer, flaggers shall demonstrate their competency in flagging procedures. Flaggers not competent in flagging procedures shall be retrained or replaced at once.?

According to OSHA, employees being struck by vehicles or mobile equipment lead to many work zone fatalities or injuries. Work zones need traffic controls identified by signs, cones, barrels and barriers.

The National Safety Council Flagger Training is a comprehensive skill-building course that meets federal industry guidelines: the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the ANSI standard ISEA-107-2015. The Office of Highway Safety, the Federal Highway Administration, and several state Departments of Transportation have reviewed this program.

Course Information

The primary objective of Workzone Flagger Training (Novice) is to train flaggers to provide safe passage of traffic through and around work areas and to minimize confusion by bringing standard flagging procedures to our nation’s highways. This program will have crew members trained and certified in safe flagging techniques in just four hours.

Students will gain:

  • Thorough understanding of flagging procedures and proper use of required equipment.
  • Improved flagging skills from hands-on training, classroom activities and a flagging skills test.
  • Increased ability to coordinate traffic movement through the work zone.

4-Hour Work Zone Flagger Training

Controlling traffic through work zones is one of the most important and dangerous operations in road construction and maintenance. Upon completion of the course you will be able to apply the resources and information learned to protect yourself and the public.

Is this training OSHA approved?

The flagger training which is provided through our institution complies with all OSHA regulation in order to prepare you to work in safe and professional manner at your worksite.

How else can I take this course?

Our instructors are only authorized for classroom delivery of this training. Classroom training is offered both through open enrollment or by employers hosting their own on-site training. You can request a quote for on-site training conducted at your location. Training topics can be customized within the procedures set forth by NSC.

How long is this training?

This is a One Day training which will take a minimum of 4 hours to complete.
