ABOUT SECURITY GUARD TRAINING

New York State law requires registration and training of security guards in the state. The DCJS Office of Public Safety provides administrative oversight for mandated security training and approves security guard training schools. The New York State Department of State Division of Licensing Services has oversight responsibility for the registration of all security guards.

All security guards are required to complete an 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course prior to applying to the Department of State for a Security Guard Registration Card. That course must be followed by a 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards within 90 days of initial employment as a security guard. Guards also must complete an 8-Hour Annual In-service Training Course for Security Guards every year.

PRE-ASSIGNMENT COURSE

This course is required by New York State as the first step in obtaining a security guard registration card from the New York State Department of State. The course provides the student with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard.

The 8-hours Pre-Assignment is needed to be taken only one time. However, a new employer could require you to retake the course. Requiring the retaking of the courses should be dictated by the new employer, not a security guard training school.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING (OJT)

A course relevant to the duties of guards, requirements of the work site, and the needs of the employer. You must complete this training within 90 days of employment as a security guard.. A written examination is given at the end of course. A passing score of 70% is required for becoming a licensed security guard.

The 16-Hour OJT consist of topics such as the role of a security guard in protecting property and lives, their legal powers and limitations, handling emergency situations, access control procedures, communications and public relations, report writing, ethics and conduct.

IN-SERVICE ANNUAL TRAINING

The department of criminal justice requires that all security guards/officers must complete an 8-Hour Annual In-service Training Course for Security Guards every year. This program is designed to meet current training needs and refresh or update guards in changes in the security field. The guard must complete this course as a prerequisite for renewal of his or her guard registration.
