What happens if my NY security guard license has expired?
Check the expiration date first. If your registration expired six months ago or more, New York requires a new application. A more recent expiration may still be handled through renewal; check your status with the Department of State. You cannot work as a security guard while your registration is expired.
Do I have to repeat all my security guard training?
An expired registration does not automatically mean you must repeat every course. Your existing training record and any outstanding requirements need to be reviewed. DCJS receives course rosters from training schools and sends training information to the Department of State.
Are fingerprints and training included in the $295 service?
The service includes application assistance, the NYS application fee, Department of State document support, and fingerprint scheduling guidance. Fingerprint and background check fees are separate. Any required training is also separate from this support service.
Can I get a training waiver?
Waivers and exemptions depend on qualifying law enforcement employment or training under DCJS rules. An expired license alone does not qualify you for a waiver. DCJS determines waiver eligibility.
How long does the process take?
Timing depends on your documents, any required training or fingerprint processing, and Department of State review. Booking support does not guarantee approval or a processing date.
