Quick Answer

Who needs EPA RRP Certified Renovator training?

In general, the RRP Rule applies to paid renovation, repair and painting work that disturbs lead-based paint in covered pre-1978 homes and child-occupied facilities. Certified firms must assign a Certified Renovator to covered jobs, and workers must be trained in lead-safe work practices.

Certification Rules

Initial Certification and Renewal

EPA's current rules distinguish between initial training and refresher training. Understanding the timing matters because an expired certification changes which course you must take.

Initial Certification

Complete an 8-hour accredited renovator course that includes two hours of hands-on learning. The course completion certificate serves as the renovator's certification credential.

Refresher Before Expiration

Complete refresher training before the current certification expires. A hands-on refresher generally renews certification for five years; an online refresher renews it for three years.

If Certification Expires

EPA states that the 8-hour initial course must be taken again to regain Certified Renovator status.

Firm certification is separate. A worker's Certified Renovator credential does not replace the RRP certification requirement that applies to the renovation firm itself.
Frequently Asked Questions

EPA RRP Lead Renovator FAQ

How long is the initial Certified Renovator course?

EPA requires the initial renovator course to be eight hours and to include two hours of hands-on learning.

Can the initial 8-hour course be completed entirely online?

No. EPA requires hands-on learning in the initial course. A blended option can place eligible instruction online, but the required hands-on component must still be completed.

How long is the Certified Renovator credential valid?

For courses completed on or after April 1, 2011, initial certification is generally valid for five years. Refresher duration depends on the refresher format.

Can I renew online?

If you remain eligible for refresher training and your certification has not expired, EPA permits an online refresher. Online refresher training results in a three-year certification period; hands-on refresher training results in a five-year period, and hands-on refresher training is required every other time.

What if my Certified Renovator certification already expired?

EPA states that you must retake the 8-hour initial course to regain certification.
