Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(3)(ii) and (iii), qualifying workers receive a minimum of 24 hours of off-site instruction plus at least one day of supervised field experience. Employers should determine which HAZWOPER worker category applies to the employee's actual duties and exposure conditions.
Who qualifies for 24-Hour HAZWOPER training?
OSHA's 24-hour initial-training category applies to certain workers who are on site only occasionally for a specific limited task and are unlikely to be exposed above applicable exposure limits, and to certain regular site workers in fully characterized areas where exposures are below applicable limits and no health hazard or emergency is expected. These workers also need at least one day of supervised field experience.

24 Hours of Class Training + Supervised Field Experience
For workers covered by OSHA 1910.120(e)(3)(ii) or (iii), initial HAZWOPER training includes a minimum of 24 hours of off-site instruction and at least one day of actual field experience under the direct supervision of a trained, experienced supervisor.
Finish the off-site instruction covering HAZWOPER hazards, controls and procedures.
Qualifying 24-hour workers need at least one day of actual field experience under direct supervision.
If a 24-hour worker later becomes a general site worker or must wear a respirator, OSHA requires additional training and field experience to reach the 40-hour category.
