New York Security Guard License Renewal Guide
Review the training steps that may need to be completed before renewing a New York security guard registration and find Tribune's annual in-service training options.
What You Need to Know
Complete Required Training
Renewal applicants should make sure required training is complete and on file before renewal processing.
View NYS Renewal Instructions →Annual In-Service Training
Unarmed guards generally need the required annual in-service training during each year of the registration term.
View Annual Training →Expired Registration
If a registration has been expired long enough that standard renewal is no longer available, a different reapplication path may apply.
View Reinstatement Guide →Check Your Training Before You Renew
For an unarmed guard, New York renewal instructions require applicable training to be complete and on file. The 16-Hour On-the-Job Training may need to be on file when applicable, and the 8-Hour Annual In-Service is required during the registration term. Armed guards have additional annual firearms training requirements.
Renewal Fee & Timing
New York security guard registrations last two years. DOS allows renewal starting 90 days before expiration; renewal forms are usually mailed around that time. The current renewal fee is $25. Review the official DOS renewal page for the current form and instructions. An expired registration does not authorize continued work.
