If you are entering New York’s security industry, two course names appear almost immediately: the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course and the 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course. They are not substitutes for one another. They are separate parts of New York’s required training sequence for unarmed security guards.
What is the difference between the 8-hour and 16-hour security guard courses?
The 8-Hour Pre-Assignment course is the initial training taken before or as part of entering the security guard licensing process. The 16-Hour On-the-Job Training course is additional training completed after beginning employment as a security guard.
8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training
The 8-hour course is the starting point for most new unarmed security guard applicants in New York. It covers foundational topics such as the role of a security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency response, communications and professional conduct.
After successfully completing the course, students receive a certificate of completion to use as part of the state registration process.
16-Hour On-the-Job Training
The 16-hour OJT provides more detailed instruction after the initial pre-assignment course. New York guidance generally requires this course to be completed within 90 days of employment. It expands on practical duties and responsibilities security guards may encounter on the job.
Do I need both courses?
For most people entering the unarmed security guard field in New York, yes. The 8-hour and 16-hour courses serve different purposes and are both part of the standard training path. A student who completes only the 8-hour course has not completed the full initial training sequence.
Which course should I take first?
Start with the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course. The 16-hour OJT comes later in the sequence.
Can I register for the 8-hour and 16-hour courses together?
Yes. Students who know they will need both can use Tribune Training Academy’s 8-Hour + 16-Hour Security Guard Training Package to keep both requirements organized under one enrollment plan.
What happens after the 8-hour and 16-hour courses?
After the initial training sequence, unarmed security guards have a continuing training requirement. The 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training Course is the recurring course used to maintain required annual training.
What if I am not sure which course I need?
Your situation may be different if you are renewing, reinstating an expired registration, transferring from another status or pursuing armed-guard work. Visit the Security Guard Training hub to choose the correct path, or review the NYS Security Guard Licensing Program if you are starting from the beginning.
