OSHA 10 vs NYC SST 10-Hour: What Construction Workers Need to Know

OSHA 10 and the NYC SST 10-hour pathway are not the same thing. OSHA 10 is an OSHA Outreach course. The NYC SST 10-hour path is additional Site Safety Training used by eligible workers who already hold qualifying prior training.

What is OSHA 10 Construction?

OSHA 10 Construction is an entry-level Outreach Training Program course covering common construction hazards, worker rights and employer responsibilities. Completing OSHA 10 does not by itself give a worker a full NYC SST card.

What is the NYC SST 10-hour upgrade?

NYC DOB currently states that workers with a qualifying OSHA 30 card issued within the last five years, or qualifying 40-Hour Site Safety training, can complete 10 additional hours toward a new SST Worker card. The current 10-hour combination is:

  • 8-Hour Fall Prevention
  • 2-Hour Mental Health Awareness

If I only have OSHA 10, what else do I need for an SST card?

NYC DOB’s current worker pathway requires a total of 40 hours. A worker with OSHA 10 needs 30 additional SST hours, including Fall Prevention, Site Safety, Supported Scaffold, Mental Health Awareness and required elective hours.

For a complete worker pathway, review Tribune’s 40-Hour SST Card Training NYC.

Does OSHA 30 make the SST path shorter?

Yes. Under the current DOB pathway, a qualifying OSHA 30 card can reduce the additional SST training needed for a new worker card to 10 hours. That is why the terms “OSHA 10” and “10-Hour SST upgrade” are easy to confuse even though they refer to different training.

What changed in 2026?

Effective August 1, 2026, NYC DOB replaced the former 2-Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness course with the 2-Hour Mental Health Awareness course in the current SST pathways.
